#DIY: Simple and Effective Old School Labelling Techniquesā€‹

Flash back to old school thinking, before the convenience of labelling equipment and personalised, colourful stickers and we had a solution. Perfect outcome for the year we named less is more...

“The stark truth that few ever grasp is that to have more we must do and consume less.”

Brendon Burchard

As ‘old school’ parents we are conscious of encouraging an awareness (with our impressionable children) of how our actions impact our immediate and global environment.

Our Family has regular conversations around environmentally friendly values, behaviours and chat about how small changes madeĀ every day do all add up to make a big difference.

We work really hard at creating positive habits around striving to balance a happy, healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

This year we set a challenge of packing one suitcase and one piece of carry-on luggage, per family member, to live in Western Australia for a few months. There were bound to be items which were accidentally left behind and ones which perhaps should have, but didnā€™t, make the ‘priority listā€™ but, once we arriveĀ and get settled, we can just pop-to-the-shop – right?

Of course we can, except if 2015 is your Year of Less is MoreĀ and you have publicly declared to create new habits and learn to live with ‘Less Stuff‘. There isĀ also the return trip to consider and the intention is for everything to fit back into that one bag. Read more »

5 Simple Acts of Kindness – Good For The Planet and Good For You!

These 5 simple acts of kindness are for those whose lifelong plan includes participating in the many recreational opportunities our natural playground has to offer. Taking a few minutes to pick up what others have left behind and minimising the use of plastic altogether, is a perfect example of discovering, that actually, what is Good for the Planet, is Good for You. Allow me to explain how...

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.

Dr Seuss – The Lorax

These 5 simple acts of kindness are for those whose lifelong plan includes participating in the many recreational opportunities this natural playground (see images above) has to offer.

This relates to me so, by showing simple acts of kindness, I am taking responsibility for my future enjoyment, promoting positive habits for my children and increasing the chances of their children experiencing the same sense of awe of our coastline.

Taking a few minutes to pick up what others have left behind and minimising the use of plastic altogether, is a perfect example of discovering, that actually, what is Good for the Planet, is Good for You.

Here are some solutions to consider which align with the CWMS journey of Keeping It R.E.A.L.

How To Balance Homework and ‘Witching’ Hour…

Outsourcing advice from a professor and a childcare professional on strategies to help keep calm during the afternoon routine and get kids homework done.

“LIFE isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to DANCE in the rain.”

Vivian Greene

Negotiating an appropriate and calm time-slot for homework to be completed after school, is no mean feat. When the topic of starting homework comes up in our household, the family room turns into a battleground of resistance and frustration. Time to gather some outside advice (another guest post coming up) on how to turn these unproductive outbursts around and create a positive learning routine.

Strategies for Developing Positive Homework Routines

The first light bulb moment occurred while attending a Resilience Information Night featuring Professor Paula Barrett, an internationally acclaimed Child Physiologist. It proved to be time well invested as the next couple of hours were spent listening to practical, well-researched advice.

Professor Barrett talked about ways to build emotional and social skills in our children, as well as resilience strategies to support them during times of worry and/or stress. Those interested can read a summary (written by a more efficient note-taker than me) from a similar Resilience Workshop presented by Professor Barrett here.

In regards to Establishing Homework Routines, Professor Barrett spoke about the importance of: Read more »

Well today is your lucky day my friends as your friendly chocolate connoisseur (me) has researched, purchased and taste-tested organic chocolate for those thinking of going to the ā€˜dark sideā€™.

Feel free to share this post with the person responsible for spoiling you thisĀ Valentines Day (orĀ any day). Conscientious shopping for this yearā€™s season of love is all wrapped up!

Firstly (Oh. Man. Formalities. Let me at the chocolate!) I am not a health professional or an expert on food. However, due to a small list of food intolerances, our household is on a #pantryoverhaul journey to better health and I am passionate about sharing these discoveries with you.

This food overhaul began to prevent living with the symptom of violent coughing fits occurring between the hours of 11pm and 3am. It initiated a journey through various detox programs, blood tests and experimentation in the expert hands of our Family’sĀ Balanced Naturopath Sandi. This isĀ giving me a broader knowledge of how important it is to understand your body and the consequences of food choices. Sugar is on the out and soy had to go; both found in my favourite treat food – chocolate!

Sandi is the qualified NaturopathĀ behind Balanced NaturopathicsĀ whereĀ she shares herĀ professionalĀ advice gathered from 15 years of experience. Here is her advice, instinctively assessing underlying issues and always offering a practical and balanced perspectiveā€¦ Read more »

Oxfam – Stocking an Impressive Range of Fair Trade Labels

This year CWMS has personally tried, tested andĀ written about aĀ whole range of eco-friendly items, introduced you toĀ companies which are making a real difference in the world, linkedĀ to independantly owned business' in weekly posts as well as anyĀ local markets explored. Oxfam is one of these and an absolute personal favourite at that. Come and see what I have discovered...

“Every time you spend money you are casting a vote for the kind of world you want.”

Ā Anna Lappe

“Around the globe, Oxfam works to find practical, innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive. We save lives and help revive livelihoods when crisis strikes. And we campaign so that the voices of the poor influence the local and global decisions that affect them.”

Did you know that in the world today one out of every three people live in poverty?

It is inspiring to read that in the last two decades 660 million people have been lifted out of poverty. Through Humanitarian Appeals and successful Campaigns, Oxfam Ā played their part by:

  • Providing individual households and whole communities with the skills and resources to help them create their own solutions to poverty.
  • Working with global partners responding to emergencies by providing aid as well as support by educating communities on how to prepare for future crisis.
  • Representing poor people through building relationships. These networks are motivated to influence governments, corporations, institutions and businesses by encouraging accountability and fair balance within policies and practices to help raise people out of poverty.

Real Or Fake – Yes It’s Time To Talk About The Christmas Tree…

You are all going to have a field day with the fact that someone who writes about Keeping It Real and shares stories of the negative effects plastic is having on our environment, has a fake Christmas tree. OneĀ which takes pride of place in the lounge room each and every year. Don't judge - please allow me to explain...

“When you open the box of Christmas tree lights to discover they are tangled and the decorations a little tired – smile, stop, breathe, try and enjoy the delight of Christmas… you’ll be amazed at the magicĀ that happens when you get into the spirit.”

Deborah BibbyĀ  – Editorial-in-chief, Real Living Magazine

You are all going to have a field day with the fact that someone who writes about Keeping It Real and shares stories of the negative effects plastic is having on our environment, has a fake Christmas tree. OneĀ which takes pride of place in the lounge room each and every year!

Please, let me explain…

Several years ago, while pregnant with our Little Man, I dragged my ever patient Husband to the Boxing Day sales and bought the biggest, bushiest, real-looking-fake-tree available in anticipation for our first Family Christmas the following year. Every year, as close to 1 December as possible, this tree is lovingly reused and is the key feature which brings our lounge room to life with the Spirit Of Christmas.

My Sister-in-Law, however, orders a real ChristmasĀ tree and their lounge room is filled with that amazing fresh pine smell only nature can provide. Christmas at her house reminds meĀ there is nothing quite like sitting around a real tree during the Festive Season, hence the inspiration for this post.

The Great Divide – 5 Ways to Sort and Conquer Recycling

This weeks postĀ is a continuation of the recycling theme and covers a lot of information, useful links and 'happy snaps' to help you divide and conquer household recycling.Ā Where to correctly place aerosols, metal items and plastic bread bags, how to stopĀ the delivery of phone books,Ā order Council rubbishĀ bins andĀ dispose of your old washing machine for free.

Ā “Why would you make something that you are going to use for a few minutes out of a material that’s basically going to last forever.”

Jeb Berrier, BagIt movie

TheĀ 10 – 16 November is Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week.Ā This campaign is the inspiration behind last weeks post, which was full of ideas highlighting Simple Constructive ways to Recycle (quality goods) and Help Others.

This weeks postĀ is a continuation of the ‘recycling’ theme and covers a lot of information, useful links and ‘happy snaps’ to help you divide and conquer household recycling.

Where to correctly place aerosols, metal items and plastic bread bags, how to stopĀ the delivery of phone books,Ā order Council rubbishĀ bins andĀ dispose of your old washing machine for free.

The fact is the world is being covered in materials which do last forever. Many of us are rethinking our consumer habits and choosing to limit the purchasing of these products however, there are occasions where this isĀ unavoidable.Ā By learning about and creating positive habits around productive waysĀ to recycle this growing pile of materials, we can all help to minimise our impact and live a more sustainable lifestyle.

Our neighbours think I have well and truly lost it going to so much trouble to line up and photograph both rubbish and bins I’m sure. Actually, I quite possibly have gone mad but, that is the price you pay when you are out to make a simple story about ‘rubbish’ look interesting and colourful.

Simple Constructive Ways to ‘Recycle’ Unwanted Items and Help Others

This week is National Recycling Week so these ideas have been gathered as inspiration to rethink how we dispose of unwanted items. We have provided five organisations which 'recycle' unwanted items such as prescription glasses, household items and quality goods and have a positive impact on other peoples lives.

“Everyone can do simple things to make a difference and every little bit really does count”.

Stella McCartney

There is a growing movement of individuals and organisations who are doing a brilliant job of educatingĀ and providing us with simple, yet constructive waysĀ to recycle unwanted items and have a positive impact on other peoplesĀ lives. One such example is Planet Ark who is responsible for National Recycling Week.

They are the inspiration around this post as these ideas have been gathered to help rethink how we dispose of unwanted items with the intention toĀ provide aĀ few options of howĀ to reuse pieces by passing them on to supportĀ someone in need.
