Queenstown is Open for ‘Snow’ Business #1 – Getting There

Everything you need to know about planning your family snow adventure in Queenstown, NZ. Including a comprehensive packing list.

The New Zealand (NZ) winter season has kicked off for 2014 and the 10 day Winter Festival is in full swing declaring – Queenstown is ready for ‘snow’ business. Coronet Peak, Mt Hutt, The Remarkables and Cardrona are all due to be officially opened by this weekend and Treble Cone on the 26th June. Snow lovers and adrenaline junkies from all over the globe will start making their way to the Southern Hemisphere to enjoy the thrilling terrain.

This year we are unable to travel to Queenstown for our annual holiday so we are sitting at home watching the webcams and staring longingly at the beautiful pictures being uploaded onto NZSki’s individual Facebook pages. You see we have well and truly caught the unshakable snowboarding bug and with two young avid travellers in tow, Queenstown ticks all the boxes as far as a brilliant family destination.

Getaways are of utmost importance in our household with the holiday budget sitting near the top of our list of financial priorities. Yes, that means we will be a bit slower in paying off our mortgage, but you only live once and we are committed to having fun along the way.

Our household runs like everyone else’s these days. Da (Dad) works long hours in a demanding and stressful role and Mum (which is me) juggles the household duties. The most common frustration in our household is finding enough ‘time’ (sound familiar?) so justifying holidays isn’t hard for us at all. It is the ‘time’ of the year allocated to step off the daily merry-go-round to just hang out and enjoy each others company. Read more »

It Must Have Been Fete: How To Create Wearable Outfits with Reloved Clothing Pieces

Buing reloved clothing is a sustainable way to revive your wardrobe as it keeps fashion in the loop, rather than seeing unwanted items going to landfill. Here is some inspiration showing exactly how to integrate your new-found treasures into wearable outfits once you get home. After all, is there any point buying a piece of clothing if you aren't excited to wear it?

Buying reloved clothing is a sustainable lifestyle choice and a positive way to revive your wardrobe as it keeps fashion in the loop, rather than seeing unwanted items going to landfill. Here is some inspiration showing exactly how to integrate your new-found treasures into wearable outfits once you get home. After all, is there any point buying a piece of clothing if you aren’t excited to wear it?

How often do you get to carry home bags, full to the brim of clothes, with the total cost coming in at under $100!

At that price they can’t be anything much to talk about right?

Wrong!

That, my friend, is exactly the basis of this story. A movie-star-style shopping spree courtesy of the preloved clothing stall at the school fete. Ultimately making a conscious choice to support our local community which also has a positive effect on our environment.

Good quality designer labels in lovely natural fabrics of cotton and silk. All in perfect condition and ready to be re-loved!

OK granted one needs the extra patience to rummage through piles of reloved clothing but what it comes down to is the thrill of the discovery. Finding that one-off piece, which you are not likely to then see walking down the street looking better on someone else and well within budget.

That buzz of success is reignited once again when you arrive home and try on the whole haul once again. Time to start pondering how to turn each of these items into an outfit.

The very best way I know how to achieve this is by either:

  1. Trying on different combinations – guaranteed to be the most fun if you invite over a trusted friend.
  2. Laying out your clothes flat, either on the bed or the (clean) floor, to see which combination looks best.

Both ways are effective, just make sure you add accessories to your new outfits to get the full effect.

After all, is there any point buying a piece of clothing if you aren’t excited to wear it?

Here is some inspiration to get you started.

Bee-cause: Why Stingless Bees Make Terrific ‘Pets’

Australian Native Stingless Bees are successful pollinators, crucial in sustaining bushland and our food supply especially: macadamia's, mangoes, watermelon and lychees. Read about how we came to have a thriving hive in our backyard and simple ways we can all contribute to keeping these insects effectively circulating in our ecosystems.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

It was during my Pop’s recent visit, a couple of weeks ago, that stingless bees became a hot topic of conversation. We were discussing our backyard and the Australian Native Stingless Bees which have taken up residence. The bees originally settled in a fully established tree, quite possibly before we moved in, however ‘their’ tree was deemed unsafe by a tree surgeon and sadly had to be removed.

The insightful tree loppers carefully separated the portion of the tree which housed the bees and positioned it safely in the garden. The hive appeared unaffected by the transfer and now, on ground level, we have a clear view of the stingless bee activity.

We refer to them as our backyard pets! Read more »

Recycled Plastic Rugs

This rug is making an appearance on CWMS as it is made from recycled plastic. According to the retailer, all rugs are made using 'shopping bags and other discarded plastic articles containing polypropylene'. This makes the rugs extremely durable for use in high traffic areas inside and perfect for outdoor entertaining and picnics.

This rug is making an appearance on CWMS as it is made from recycled plastic. According to the retailer, Fab Habitat, all rugs are made using “shopping bags and other discarded plastic articles containing polypropylene.” This makes the recycled plastic rugs extremely durable for use in high traffic areas inside as well as perfect for outdoor entertaining and picnics.

These ‘Fab Habitat’ recycled plastic rugs were discovered by my Sister-in-law almost two years ago. The Lhasa Orange and Violet Rug have been a feature in our front room ever since having the enlightening conversation about them. It instantly transformed this from a relatively unused space, into one of our most favourite places in the house to just hang out.

The cushions you see placed on the recycled plastic rug are from Great Outdoor Cushions. This is an Australian owned small business and everything they have for sale on their website is made in Australia – HUGE tick from me!! The fabric is mildew, fade, water and stain-resistant and ours still look as ‘great’ today as they did two years ago when we bought them. The fabric designs change regularly so you’ll have to jump onto their website and see what they have available at the moment.

Moving the recycled plastic rug from inside to outside most weekends soon became a pain so, an online order was put through to Ruchin at Fab Habitat, for rug number two. This became our outdoor rug as it was much more convenient not to disturb the set up of the front room each time we wanted to use it outside. Read more »

Friday Night is Movie Night!

Friday night is movie night so, visit on a Friday night and you will come across our family and more than likely members of our extended family, all lined up in front of the 'tele', movie on, with the smell of fish and chips filling the air. This week I'd love to hear about your family rituals. How do you and the people you care about, regularly spend time together?

Visit our house on a Friday night and you will come across our family and more than likely members of our extended family, all lined up in front of the ‘tele’, movie on, with the smell of fish and chips filling the air because – Friday Night is Movie Night!

Pop into our house on any other given night during the week and you are likely to find me folding washing, ironing, cleaning up the kitchen, working on my blog or tackling one of the many projects currently on the go.

If the children are still awake, add to that, listening to school readers, revising sight words or battling with the ‘toilet and teeth’ routine, on a mission to get them both to bed on time. Read more »

Chainsaw Art Inspiration – A Simple Way To Decorate Your Garden

This Chainsaw Art (ch-art) is a perfect example of using a touch of creativity to reuse or repurpose something no longer in its original form and turning it into something useful. In this case a quirky garden feature.

Chainsaw Art (Ch-art) is perfect for those who, for one reason or another have a tree stump sitting dormant in your garden. Especially is you have no fireplace where you can safely burn the wood and organising a stump grinder is an added expense. Chainsaw Art can make the stump look more appealing?

Have you ever hear of Chainsaw Art (Ch-art) in the garden? (Shortening words really is the Australian way😉)

This Chainsaw Art (Ch-art) was originally a fig tree however, due to their extensive root system and the fact they grow absolutely huge, having one this close to the house was a disaster waiting to happen.

The day my husband removed the tree was a sad day for everyone as, being surrounded by established foliage in a hot climate is the preferred option (natures air conditioning), as well as having a natural privacy curtain. We would much rather look out the window at greenery rather than at a neighbour.

Never the less, keeping the house and foundations safe was much more important.

Cardboard Weed Mat – Eco-friendly Weed Fighting Hack For Gardeners

Although most of the garden was beautifully under control, the weeds were not. Weeding was becoming a never-ending job and taking up far too much valuable time and it was clear a solution was needed. This is why I swear by using a cardboard weed mat and why you might need one too!

A cardboard weed mat is perfect for a garden that is in a complete state; overgrown, full of weeds and in this case, surrounded by a barely surviving lawn. When we purchased our home the overgrowth was so established there was enough soil on the roof of the chook pen to keep many earthworms contented. They were quickly shovelled off into the garden below.

Using cardboard as a weed mat is a proactive and eco-friendly option when looking for alternatives to landfill. This sustainable gardening hack helps control weeds in the garden and, as the combination of cardboard and mulch decomposes, you will find an improvement to the soil quality. This is a simple step-by-step guide on how it is done.

It took quite a few weekends of ‘blood (there were many cuts and scrapes), sweat and tears’ to bring it back under control before slowly, but surely, we created some lovely little areas we are now proud of.

Although the garden required some initial hard work to clean up and rejuvenate, thanks to the cardboard weed mat the maintenance routine now is little to none. For our household this is the essential target which needs to be met, as time is just as scarce for us, as I’m sure it is for you.

This category ‘Eat, Throw, Grow’ is a work in progress as we continue to integrate our back garden and conscientiously reuse our household waste. Read more »

This reusable 'Starters Kit' lists 5 practical items for those keen to live a little greener, all tried and tested by our family. In fact, they have become the essentials we reach for both at home and on our travels, in our quest to replace single-use plastic in our lives.

“Small positive acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world”.

🌱 Updated July 2019 🌱

This reusable ‘Starters Kit’ is full of practical items for those keen to live a little greener, all tried and tested by our family. In fact, they have become the essentials we reach for on a day-to-day basis in our quest to replace single-use plastic in our lives.

Our sustainable journey began by looking at simple ways we could minimise everyday waste and cure our single-use plastic habits. The first step was Shopping Plastic Bag-free using our Onya Bags. Once we had successfully established this habit we moved on to other areas of our daily routine where we could implement the switch to reusable items.

Getting organised really is the key to living a sustainable lifestyle along with setting yourself realistic goals.

It is also important to remember to be kind to yourself – starting slow is just fine! By introducing a couple of changes at one time you will naturally begin to discover other ways you can add eco-friendly habits into your everyday routine. With an estimated 8M metric tonnes of plastic ending up in our oceans every year, imagine one full garbage truck tipping in their entire contents every minute, the planet really needs us to succeed in #beingthechange. The Most Practical and Convenient Reusable Bag to Make Plastic Bag-Free Shopping Easy

This reusable bag is small enough to fit in just about any size bag you carry with you everyday, making refusing plastic bags while out shopping super easy!

Fail to Prepare, Prepare to Fail

It was a recent comment posted after my Plastic Bag-Free Shopping story which firstly gave me something to ponder, then became the topic for this reusable bag post…

“Those who have ducked in to pick up a few things from the shops on their way home is almost a different target market from what is spoken about in this blog”

The comment came from a lady who was sharing her observations while commuting home on a train. Her discussion was comparing the lifestyle differences of people who shop on a weekly basis with people who are perhaps cooking for one, maybe two people and dropping into the supermarket to buy bits and pieces when they finish work.

She brought my attention to the fact that packing a reusable bag in your boot before you set out to do your grocery shopping is all well and good but, what is the alternative to using plastic bags when you find yourself popping into a shop unexpectedly?

Forward-thinking people tend to approach a problem with a solution already in hand which was certainly the case here. Read more »

Lights Out for Earth Hour

Earth Hour was founded in Sydney back in 2007 by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). This movement is now supported by 7001 Cities and 154 Countries around the globe. The simple message to each and every one of us is insisting we, as individuals, take responsibility for protecting our planet. Will you turn your lights out for Earth Hour?

You have all heard of the annual ‘lights out’ event called Earth Hour?

Organisers are, as we speak, working around the clock to educate and recruit people globally. This year they are asking us to sign up and make a ‘pledge‘ ensuring support for fighting Climate Change goes beyond the official ‘Earth Hour’. The simple message to each and every one of us is insisting we, as individuals, take responsibility for protecting our Planet.

Earth Hour was founded in Sydney back in 2007 by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). This movement is now supported by 7001 Cities and 154 Countries around the globe. This year (2014) the focus is on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. It needs our attention otherwise, by 2030, the effects Climate Change are causing will be irreversible.

It isn’t too late to show your support and recognise we are the people who can fix one of the biggest issue facing humanity – Climate Change. Read more »
