Why we are Refusing and How we are Reusing, Plastic Bags

Plastic bags are slowly being recognised as a serious environmental hazard all over the world. This post will delve into the importance of finding your why for changing habits and using reusable bags, how to function with new everyday routines and what to do with the plastic bags you still have in your home.

Those who start with WHY never manipulate, they inspire. And people follow them not because they have to; they follow because they want to.

Simon Sinek.

Many of you who are reading these weekly posts are possibly wondering – ‘Why has Shea become so passionate with saying NO to plastic bags?’

This image visually sums up my WHY we are refusing plastic bags and is the answer to your question, until a concise slogan is confirmed.

The purpose of this blog and ultimately the journey, is to respect today and to preserve our tomorrows. Days like these are spectacular and when we tread lightly, leaving places either exactly how we found them or better (refer to a previous article introducing Take3 ), our lifestyle as we know it is preserved.

This is the motivation behind consistently creating positive habits to reduce, reuse, recycle, repurpose and upcycle.

The more people who consider this thought process as normal, the higher the odds are of future generations experiencing days such as shared in the image above.

Start with working out your WHY and then take actionable steps to make it happen!

Here are some of the ways we have found to reuse the plastic bags which still manage to enter our home  Read more »

#DIY Jigsaw Piece Plate – Out of the Man Cave

This Jigsaw piece plate is a perfect example of taking something no longer needed in its original form and upcycling it into something new.

This quirky and unique jigsaw piece plate certainly is a terrific conversation starter at dinner parties. It is a perfect example of taking something no longer needed in its original form and upcycling it into something new.

The ‘Royal We’ are responsible for bringing this clever and practical jigsaw piece plate to life:

  • One insightful person to find the idea and file the tear sheet away for a rainy day in a Home Inspiration Folder (me).
    PLUS
  • Someone who is handy with a saw to make it happen. My Husband might need a bit of encouragement and a touch of nagging to get started but, once he is inspired, he really is quite clever.

This Jigsaw piece plate is a perfect example of taking something no longer needed in its original form and upcycling it into something new.

Full credit for this jigsaw piece plate must go to Australian Lifestyle Magazine Better Homes and Gardens.

The timber for this jigsaw piece plate was originally the shelves from the linen cupboard we removed from our first ‘reno’ house – a 1930’s original Queenslander. My husband squirrelled them away knowing one day the pieces of solid timber could be upcycled and made into something new.

    You will need:

  • Timber at least 10mm thick
  • Paper, pencil, eraser
  • Jigsaw with a fine scroll blade
  • Belt sander
  • Dremel
  • Sandpaper
  • Food Grade Tongue Oil with brush (sorry forgot about the brush when I took the photo) Read more »

Online Grocery Shopping – Plastic Bag-Free?

So you have mastered plastic bag-free grocery shopping but what happens when you place an online order? TIme to do some investigative journalism...

Did you know South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territories are the Australian States which already have a ban on Single-use Plastic Bags?

Queensland Conservation are working hard toward seeing Queensland join this list as the fifth state of Australia and have set a goal for as soon as 2015. They are inviting us to join their Plastic-bag Free March Campaign and see first hand how easy it is to ‘Kick the Plastic Bag Habit.

Done!

But what to do when the friendly delivery man walked this pile of plastic bags into our house – how do you order your groceries online and have them delivered any other way?

Can Online Grocery Shopping be Plastic Bag-Free?

Online grocery shopping has come about in our house as placing an order and having it delivered takes seriously less time than getting organised, with an almost two-year-old in tow and head to the supermarket.

Since committing to yet another activity, blogging, family members have strongly suggested the need to reassess other time-consuming chores. Looking from the outside in and trying to remain true to The Year of Striving for Balance, this want-to-be Super Mum needs to realise there are only so many hours in the day and downtime is also important!

So what on earth am I going to do about those plastic bags?

STEP ONE

There was pre-thought put in during my recent online grocery shopping order. Of course, the items had to arrive in something and our designated personal shopper didn’t call into home first to pick up the reusable bags…

So this was one idea, putting a note on the top of the order:
‘Please use the minimum amount of plastic bags when packing this order’.

So you have mastered plastic bag-free grocery shopping but what happens when you place an online order? TIme to do some investigative journalism...

Clearly that made no difference…

The tally from this shop was:

  • 20 bags
  • 93 Items
  • 4.65 items in each bag

This isn’t at all in sticking with our commitment of Plastic-Bag Free Shopping.

STEP TWO

Putting in a call to the supermarket Customer Service Department explaining our household stand against Plastic Bags. There must be an alternative solution against the online grocery shopping order arriving in them, right?

The Official Position Around Online Grocery Shopping Plastic Bag-free

This request must have been a first for the Customer Service Representative who answered the call, as she put me on hold to talk to her Supervisor.

The solution was – Read more »

Everything You Need To Know About Clean up Australia Day

Clean Up Australia Day

Did you know Clean Up Australia Day has become the Nation’s largest community-based environmental event?

The founder, Ian Kiernan, is an ‘average Australian bloke’, builder by trade and passionate solo yachtsman. It was during the 1987 BOC Challenge Solo Round-the-World Yacht Race, Ian witnessed first hand the effect our pollution is having in oceans globally.

Motivated to make a difference, Ian, supported by a committee of friends, co-ordinated Clean Up Sydney Harbour Day in 1989. The call inspired a group of 40,000 volunteers who participated in this first-ever event and together removed many tonnes of rubbish.

The following year the organisation set out to inspire our Nation. In 1990 an estimated 300,000 enthusiastic volunteers proved Australian’s care about the effect pollution has on the environment and so Clean Up Australia Day was born.

Clean Up Australia Day

Clean Up The World Day began in 1993 with the full support from the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP). An estimated 30 Million volunteers in 80 countries dedicated themselves to the world first event. Since the launch day an estimated 40 Million people from 130 countries have participated and strongly believe in the campaign theme: Read more »

I am going to step into foreign territory here and go where no man/women has gone before – I am publicly declaring a change of name of my 2014 Focus to Striving For Balance.

PHEW! Am I glad to get that off my chest!

How are you all going with your theme this year?

By now you should be well on your way to ‘Moving it’, ‘Taking Action’, ‘Spending Thoughtfully’, ‘Just Doing it’ ‘Progressing’ etc…

I am not completely sure of the rules but, it was during Yoga last night I realised my first theme ‘Year of Sabbatical’ is just not sitting well for my 2014. I haven’t checked in with ‘Zen Ben’ yet to confirm if a name change is in fact allowed or not. When I have been unsure of things in the past his advise has been ‘Just Do It’ – so consider it done!

It was somewhere in between Upward Facing Dog and Hanging Dog at Yoga this week when I realised I couldn’t deny the name change any longer.  This year I have not been working on disappearing on Sabbatical (who was I kidding!) I have in fact been striving to balance all of my commitments. Read more »

Day #1 of Successful Plastic Bag-Free Shopping – Check!

Committing to shopping plastic bag-free is all about getting organised. The first step is always the hardest however stick with it. I am here to prove if I can change my habits anyone can.

All this research is inarguably pointing to ridding our home of plastic bags so it is time to tackle plastic bag-free shopping!

Today is shopping day, so I have pulled out the reusable shopping bags from the back of the pantry and set off to buy our fruit and veg and conquer plastic bag-free shopping.

Over the last week I have had many conversations, both with you guys (the dedicated support team of this blog) and of course my Sister, regarding the use of plastic bags. Pulling that disastrous number of 151 at the end of my Plastic Bag Stocktake was a huge wake-up call for me and solutions need to be found. Read more »

The Great Plastic Bag Stocktake

Doing a plastic bag stocktake in your home is a confronting way to begin a plastic free lifestyle. Sound crazy? Sometimes we need a bit of crazy to spur us into positive action...

The plastic bag stocktake was undertaken the day I came home from the supermarket with these packaged tomatoes!

I can’t believe you bought tomatoes in all that plastic packaging?”

Our Five Year Old Environmentalist and Take3

There are many conversations had between a Mother and Child - this one is the reason our five year old unexpectedly became a young little environmentalist and it's all thanks to the organisation called Take3.

Take3 – A Clean Beach Initiative

Take3 is the non-profit organisation challenging us to pick up (and responsibly dispose of) three pieces of rubbish, every time you leave a beach or a waterway. This organisation, started by Tim Silverwood and his buddies, reminds us there is an action we can all take – starting right now!

Our Little Man is an avid photographer. This is a photo he took entirely off his own bat last year, Read more »

I’m Talking Rubbish – An Introduction to the Situation of Plastic Pollution

An introduction to the situation of plastic pollution and how we can have conversations with the next generation about taking action and changing habits to ultimately work towards having a positive impact.

Have you heard about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?

This is the name given to the collection of plastic pollution which is slowly being carried by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre. The whole of Australia could fit into its sweeping currents which are no longer home to Organic Matter rich in Biological Nutrients but now carries the results of 60 odd years of irresponsibly disposed of plastics and other artificial trash. After leaving our shores and being battered around by the elements, boats and wildlife, this rubbish is broken down into tiny pieces (not able to biodegrade) and descends deep into the water column.

This time last year our family was on holiday at Crescent Head on the Mid North Coast of  NSW, enjoying a couple of weeks in my Husband’s Parents’ caravan. For 30 odd year’s they have secured the same site at the Caravan Park and now their Grandchildren are building up childhood memories doing the same activities their parents did all those years ago. That’s what makes it great – simple, old school fun with no television! Read more »
