If it can’t be reduced, reused, repaired, rebuilt, refurbished, refinished, resold, recycled, or composted, then it should be restricted, redesigned or removed from production.

Making your own produce bags is a simple idea and actually, with just a quick modification, these bags can continue doing exactly what they were designed for – carrying produce. So they really are perfect to take fruit & veggie shopping!
If my ‘people’ knew years ago that in the unforeseen future Shea would be reusing orange produce bags (which had somehow found their way into her house), they would’ve had a good old laugh.
Actually, they probably are reading this right now and doing just that – how times have changed!
It is amazing what you discover when looking for practical ways to reuse or recycle perfectly good items rather than just sending them to landfill.
As promised, all new discoveries made along my journey of Keeping It R.E.A.L will be road-tested first before sharing with you. So here we go…
To Make Your Own Produce Bags You will need:
-
- About 10 minutes
-
- Orange produce bags
-
- Ribbon or string
- Scissors
Step One:
Thread your ribbon through the holes of the produce bag starting about an inch from the top edge.
Step Two:
Stretch the opening of the produce bag out the whole way before deciding on the ribbon/string length. By cutting the ends on an angle or slightly melting them with an open flame you will prevent fraying.
Step Three:
Tie a knot to secure the ribbon and you’re all done.
I am pleased to report that the homemade produce bags maiden voyage to the weekend markets was a huge success. No strange looks and no one escorting me from the premises for not conforming and using the plastic produce bags provided.
Actually, I think I could go as far as to say no one really even noticed – perhaps only once I started taking the sneaky photo’s!
Since there were only the two bags the biggest problem was picking what would go in them.
What else could you reuse these orange produce bags for? Or perhaps you have another great idea for making reusable produce bags out of something you already have at home…?

CWMS is so proud to report that we have enjoyed a big month of positive exposure. Our Repurposing Your Jars in Four Easy Steps post made a guest appearance on both the Biome Facebook Page and their Weekly Newsletter. This week Take3 shared a photo of ours on their Facebook Page which reached the highest tally of hits we have experienced so far. Sending out the hugest “THANK YOU’ to these organisations for their ongoing support.
I would like to take this opportunity to say “Hi, great to have you join our community” to all the new followers which have discovered and joined us due to this recent publicity. I hope you find these stories both inspiring, helpful and entertaining.
